Quarantine Filmmaking Tips - Post Production
You've worked out all the kinks for shooting your film remotely, and now you're ready to jump into post production, but hold on there because it's still not smooth sailing yet. So here's some tips on post production workflow for your remote film shoot.
First up and probably most important, you need to get all those video and audio files your actors shot. The best way to do this is to have your actors set up an account with a cloud service such as Dropbox so that they can send you their files via the internet. However, if the cost of a paid account like Dropbox's over budget, you can also have them send their files for free via we transfer.
Next up, if your actors shot on their camera, phones or built in computer cameras, you might have some noisy footage to work with. So I'd recommend investing in a plugin called neat video that helps analyze your video footage and significantly cuts down on noise. It's pretty amazing and definitely the best hundred dollars I've ever spent. You can find a link to neat video in the description below.
And finally, since you're probably sacrificing on quality, when it comes to cameras, lighting, and maybe even sound, then I recommend adding production value into your film through special effects and animation. For my short film, Joining Call, we added production value by hiring an After Effects artist to create a custom animated background for our video chat, as well as make a cool motion, graphic animated ending credit sequence. We then took it a step further and hired an artist to make custom artwork of the cast for the movie poster. Since we couldn't gather them up in one place for a photo.
By taking the time to add these extra touches, your film will stand out from all the other remotely made short films. Now stay inside and film it yourself!
